The Chairman, Senate Committee on South East Development Commission (SEDC), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has expressed satisfaction with work on the Commission’s headquarters in Enugu.
Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, spoke on Monday when he led members of the Committee on an oversight visit to inspect the project and assess operations.
He said the Committee observed noticeable progress compared to earlier engagements with the Commission.
“So far, we are making very good progress, unlike when we started. I hope that the Commission, especially the management team, sustains this progress. We will be here in December to see progress,” Kalu said.
He explained that the team inspected two facilities, including the office currently occupied by the Commission and another building provided by the Enugu State Government being completed for its use.
Kalu described the headquarters building as a good edifice and said the level of work was encouraging.
The former Abia State governor revisited his earlier disagreement with the Commission over operating from Abuja, insisting it must operate from the South-East where it was established to serve.
“The only problem that I said before, and I repeat, is that they cannot operate from Abuja. They must operate from where they are set up. This is where they are located,” he said.
According to him, that dispute has now been resolved after seeing the two offices in Enugu.
“Our quarrel before was about being in Abuja and not being in Enugu. So that quarrel is over now,” he added.
Kalu urged the Commission to take its activities to grassroots communities across the South-East, stressing its presence must be felt beyond administrative offices.
He noted that the Commission is less than one year old but must sustain efforts to deliver on its mandate.
The Committee is expected back in Enugu in December to review progress on the headquarters and other operation
