Nine military officers, allegedly linked to Boko Haram terrorists, reportedly escaped on Monday from a military guardroom at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Military sources confirmed the jailbreak to SaharaReporters. However, the Nigerian Army is yet to react to the development at the time of filing this report.
The escapees were alleged to be involved in arms trafficking to terrorist groups operating in Nigeria’s North East.
It was gathered that reports of the jailbreak have led to serious concerns within Nigeria’s security sector.
The development comes days after President Bola Tinubu appointed new service chiefs.
Unconfirmed reports claimed that one of the escapee officers have been rearrested, while eight are still at large.
The alleged jailbreak inside a high security cantonment has already sparked outrage, coming on the heels of appointment of new services chiefs and US President Donald Trump’s threat to consider military options against the soaring terrorist activities in the country.
In September 2024 over 200 inmates escaped from the Borno prison due to a flooding incident.
