HOW ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS TRANSFORMING LEARNING IN NIGERIAN SCHOOLS

In recent years, education has experienced a rapid transformation driven by technology. One of the most influential innovations shaping this change is Artificial Intelligence (AI). While many still view AI as a complex concept limited to tech experts, it is gradually becoming a powerful tool in the education sector, especially for students and teachers.

According to an article by Prof. Aytül Erçil,  Member of Swiss Innovation Valley advisory board and a member of the joint scientific and industrial Advisory Board of European Machine Vision Association, published in AI Horizon Journal for AI Ethics & Integrity International Association, Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has rapidly developed in recent years, transforming many aspects of modern life, from how businesses operate to how individuals interact with technology.

AI encompasses a range of technologies designed to simulate human intelligence, including machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision. As AI applications become prevalent in sectors such as healthcare, finance, and education, studying their social impacts is becoming increasingly important. AI is not just a technological innovation; it is a phenomenon that affects economic, social, and cultural dynamics.

Positive Social Impacts of Artificial Intelligence

AI applications significantly contribute to improving quality of life. In healthcare, AI-supported diagnostic tools analyse medical images with very high accuracy, examining genomic data to provide early diagnosis and personalized treatment plans for patients. AI-powered chatbots in healthcare settings can alleviate the burden on providers by answering patient queries and enhancing patient satisfaction.

In education, AI technologies provide customized learning experiences designed to meet the specific needs of each student. By examining learning behaviours, these systems pinpoint areas where students face challenges and arrange educational resources accordingly to enhance overall learning results and create a more efficient and engaging learning experience. Furthermore, AI can streamline administrative duties, enabling teachers to focus more on instruction.

The business sector gains from enhanced efficiency and productivity thanks to AI. By automating routine tasks, employees can concentrate on more strategic efforts, while AI-enhanced data analytics allows for improved resource distribution and more streamlined operations. From increasing sales to optimizing supply chains, AI has a significant influence on businesses, playing a crucial role in overall economic growth. For instance, in the manufacturing sector, automation allows factories to produce more with less labour. Enhanced decision-making mechanisms through data analytics can also improve customer experience. In customer service, AI-driven chatbots and virtual assistants reduce response times and increase customer satisfaction. For example, AI that analyses user behaviour on e-commerce platforms can create personalized marketing strategies, boosting sales while providing customers with a more satisfying shopping experience.

AI also significantly contributes to strengthening social connections. AI-supported translation services break down language barriers, promoting communication between different communities. Within the realm of social media, AI algorithms produce content that both informs and engages users, while community-building applications leverage AI to link individuals with similar interests across geographical boundaries. Additionally, AI systems can bolster safety and security through crime prediction models, surveillance tools, and incident response strategies, contributing to lower crime rates and enhanced public safety.

Here in Nigeria,  learning at the basic, secondary and tertiray  education leveles is still largely traditional, with students relying heavily on textbooks, classroom notes, and teacher instructions. However, this method sometimes limits creativity, speed of understanding, and access to updated information. Artificial Intelligence is now bridging this gap by making learning more interactive, personalized, and accessible.

AI-powered tools such as virtual tutors, learning assistants, and educational applications are helping students understand subjects at their own pace. For example, students can now ask questions, receive instant explanations, and access simplified learning materials through AI platforms. This reduces dependency on physical classroom time and encourages self-learning.

Teachers are also benefiting from AI also. It helps in preparing lesson materials, generating examples, and even identifying areas where students need improvement. This allows educators to focus more on guiding students rather than spending excessive time on repetitive tasks.

Despite these benefits, the adoption of AI in Nigerian education is still at an early stage. Many schools are yet to integrate digital tools into their learning systems due to lack of awareness, infrastructure, or training. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for growth.

As the world continues to advance technologically, it is important for Nigerian schools to embrace AI as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for traditional learning. When properly applied, it can enhance creativity, improve performance, and prepare students for a digital future.

In conclusion, Artificial Intelligence is not here to replace teachers or textbooks but to improve how students learn and interact with knowledge. The future of education will depend on how well schools adapt to this change
