The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has said that governors and overzealous party members, not President Bola Tinubu, should be held responsible for actions against opposition figures in their states.
NNPP National Secretary, Oginni Olaposi, stated this in Abuja over the weekend while reacting to the alleged blockade of Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from visiting displaced persons in Benue State.
Olaposi said it was wrong to prevent any Nigerian from entering any state, but warned against automatically blaming the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Presidency for such incidents.
“If we must get things right in Nigeria, there’s need to stop misleading information, especially for the younger generation,” he stated.
According to him, some actions are carried out by overzealous party members or governors without directives from their parties or national leadership, yet the blame is often transferred to the party and the Presidency.
“Governors should especially in this season, rein in their supporters and also take the blame for their own actions or inactions,” he said.
Olaposi urged that incidents like the one in Benue be addressed promptly to prevent speculation and protect the country’s image.
He lamented that every negative occurrence in the country was often blamed on the President, describing the trend as unfair.
The NNPP scribe, however, condemned the alleged blockade of Obi in Benue, stressing that every Nigerian, including presidential candidates, has the constitutional right to move freely and visit any state.
