Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has declared that no nation can achieve its full potential when a large segment of its population is excluded from governance, diplomacy and economic leadership.
He spoke on Thursday in New York at the presentation of the book, ‘The Female Diplomat: Navigating Power, Ambition and Identity,” held at Nigeria House.
Bamidele said including women in public governance is not an act of favour, but a strategic investment in Nigeria’s human capital and institutional strength.
He noted that President Bola Tinubu, through the Renewed Hope Agenda, recognises that Nigeria’s development must draw on the talents of all citizens, especially women and youths.
”Meaningful inclusion goes beyond the presence of women in institutions. It requires genuine opportunities to participate in decision-making and shape public policy,” he said.
The book launch attracted top diplomats and leaders including UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim; and Nigeria’s Ambassador to the US, Amb. Kayode Are.
Bamidele, who chaired the event, said democracy is strengthened when citizens see themselves represented in institutions meant to serve them.
He said Nigeria’s foreign relations are also enriched when represented by capable professionals who reflect the breadth of national talent.
The Senate Leader assured that the National Assembly will continue to promote fair, accessible and responsive institutions through legislation, oversight and representation.
According to him, the parliament is committed to creating an environment where competence is recognised and leadership is strengthened by qualified women.
”This is not government responsibility alone. Political institutions, diplomatic service, private sector, academia and civil society all have roles to play,” Bamidele added.
He also participated in the Nigeria Investment Forum 2026 in New York, which convened investors, development finance institutions and business leaders to explore opportunities in Nigeria.
