    ‎

‎Political coalition, G100 holds its first summit of Nigeria’s opposition parties in Abuja today (Monday, August 31 2026) to chart a structured process for cooperation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

    ‎

‎The meeting comes amid uncertainty over whether the coalition can produce a consensus presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

    ‎

‎In a statement issued by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of G100, the summit follows the group’s August 2, 2026 publication of ‘The doctrine of a necessary democratic opposition’.

    ‎

‎That document came after weeks of consultations with leadership of six opposition parties: the African Democratic Congress (ADC); Alliance for Peoples Movement (APM); Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC); Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

    ‎

‎According to Lukman, the consultations produced “a framework for opposition cooperation and coordination”, which identified areas of convergence while respecting each party’s distinct identity.

    ‎

‎”At the centre of the consultations was a common recognition of the need for a credible, organised and competitive democratic opposition, and a willingness to engage the difficult questions that meaningful cooperation ahead of 2027 will require.

    ‎

‎“Cooperation does not require any party to disappear into another. The first question before party leaders is not who leads the ticket. It is what we are, together, prepared to do for this country,” he explained.

    ‎

‎Lukman disclosed that proposals before today’s summit include the establishment of structures to facilitate negotiations and five specialised working groups.

    ‎

‎He added that subject to party approvals, the bodies would be mandated to develop, within four weeks, the principal documents and agreements needed to give institutional form to opposition cooperation.

    ‎

‎G100 clarified that today’s meeting is not designed to immediately pick an opposition consensus presidential candidate.

    ‎

‎Meanwhile, the presidential hopeful of Accord, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim; his counterparts in the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, and SDP Adebayo have reportedly agreed to form a joint democratic force.
