Between January and June, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has taken into custody no fewer than 281,421 individuals across the country for various road traffic offenses. This revelation was conveyed by Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Bisi Kazeem, the spokesperson for FRSC, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday. The cumulative number of offenses committed amounted to 307,554.
The offenses cited encompass a range of violations such as driving with worn-out or expired tires, engaging in dangerous driving practices, using mobile phones while driving, exceeding speed limits, violating designated routes, overloading vehicles, and failing to utilize seatbelts.
ACM Kazeem went on to detail that these apprehensions transpired in all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He also underscored the significance of the implementation of body cameras by FRSC’s personnel since 2021. This technological advancement has significantly enhanced the effectiveness of the Corps’ field operations.
The integration of this technology has not only helped in monitoring traffic, but has also facilitated swift response in rescue operations and real-time data collection for informed decision-making. Furthermore, the utilization of body cameras has bolstered the commitment of FRSC’s operatives during their service duties, emphasizing the importance of upholding dignity while ensuring road safety.
ACM Kazeem took the opportunity to caution motorists about the necessity of adhering rigorously to traffic regulations and maintaining their vehicles in proper condition before embarking on journeys. He emphasized that leniency would not be extended in cases of violations. Stressing the paramount importance of conforming to road use best practices, the FRSC spokesperson asserted that only through such compliance can the safety of all road users be guaranteed.
