    Published on

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a statesman of rare integrity and a towering figure in Nigeria’s history.

In a message issued Monday, Tuggar said Buhari’s passing was a profound national loss, noting that his life and career embodied discipline, unity, and a relentless fight against corruption.

“President Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, both in uniform and in civilian leadership,” he said. “His calm resolve during turbulent times and his steadfast belief in the promise of Nigeria will continue to inspire generations.”

Tuggar described the late former president as a symbol of Nigeria’s strength and dignity both at home and on the international stage — “a leader who carried the burdens of state with humility and a deep sense of duty.”

On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigeria’s diplomatic community, Tuggar extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the government and people of Nigeria, and all who mourn him.

“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus,” the minister prayed.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s head of state in both military and democratic eras, is remembered for his lifelong commitment to the ideals of discipline, national cohesion, and accountability.

He passed away on Sunday while receiving medical care at a hospital in London, aged 82.
