In a bid to avert loss of lives and property, as well as prevent outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases arising from incessant flooding, Kwara State Government has commenced an aggressive sensitisation campaign to nip this scourge, particularly in the riverine areas of the State.

The sensitisation campaign team, which was led by the State Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, visited Gbaradogi village in Patigi Local Government Area, where it conveyed to the people government’s commitment to public safety, while appealing to those affected by flood to relocate to safer abode so as to avoid further disaster.

“The current administration is deeply concern about the impending flooding situation and will therefore take proactive measures at ensuring safety of lives and property and as well avoid the outbreak of communicable diseases,” Buge emphasised.

The Commissioner therefore urged those residing in riverine communities, to heed government’s warnings by relocating to higher grounds or the Internally Displaced Persons’ camp which provided by the state government.

She also warned against river travelling during rainy seasons and in the night to prevent avoidable boat accidents.

Buge also stressed the importance of obtaining approvals from relevant government agencies before embarking on any constructions and avoiding building houses close to or on waterways, adding that residents should follow government’s directives on evacuation as provided by the State Ministry of Environment and the State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs).

The Commissioner reaffirmed government’s determination to continue to provide necessary relief and support for affected communities, while also encouraging sustainable living practices.

In his remarks, the village Head of Gbaradogi, Alhaji Ndatsadu Muhammad, commended the state government’s initiative, noting that it would go a long way to prevent unnecessary loss of lives and property in riverine areas.

He, however, sought more relief materials to alleviate the suffering of affected people, particularly in the provisions of food and portable water.
