On September 25, 2024, the House of Representatives rejected a proposal for a ₦300bn grant from the Federal Government to address the aftermath of severe flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State. The flooding, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, led to the deaths of over 40 people and damaged key public institutions, including the Shehu of Borno’s Palace and the Maiduguri Correctional Centre.

Amos Magaji, representing Jaba/Zangon Kataf Federal Constituency, raised the issue during a plenary session, highlighting the destruction of homes, markets, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. He warned of potential disease outbreaks if swift intervention was not taken.

Inuwa Garba, representing Yamaltu Deba Federal Constituency, Gombe State, proposed a ₦300bn grant for flood victims. However, the motion was rejected following a voice vote. Lawmakers argued that significant donations had already been made by government agencies and Nigerians, although the House still urged the government to support the victims without specifying an amount.

The House also called for the renovation of the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Shehu of Borno Palace, and other damaged facilities, mandating several committees to ensure compliance.
