Flamengo clinch FIFA Challenger Cup, setup clash with PSG

    Published on

Flamengo continued their remarkable run of success on the global stage on Sunday night, defeating Egypt’s Pyramids FC 2–0 in Al Rayyan, Qatar, to claim the FIFA Challenger Cup and secure a place in the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025™.

The Brazilian giants, fresh from domestic, continental and international triumphs, lifted their fourth trophy in just 14 days, underlining their dominance at the close of the 2025 season. The victory came three days after Flamengo overcame CONCACAF Champions Cup winners Cruz Azul to win the FIFA Derby of the Americas™, further extending an extraordinary spell of silverware.

At the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, west of Doha, Flamengo asserted their pedigree against the CAF Champions League holders, with both goals arriving from expertly delivered set-pieces. Midway through the first half, playmaker Giorgian de Arrascaeta swung in a pinpoint free-kick that Leo Pereira met with a powerful header to open the scoring.

Seven minutes after the restart, de Arrascaeta was again the architect, sending in another dangerous delivery that Danilo headed home, replicating his decisive contribution in Flamengo’s Copa Libertadores triumph earlier in the year. Despite spirited pressure from Pyramids in the closing stages, Filipe Luís’ side remained composed to seal a deserved 2–0 win.

The success makes Flamengo the first South American club to win the FIFA Challenger Cup and the first from the continent to reach the final under the competition’s revised format, following Pachuca’s victory in the inaugural 2024 edition.

With the Challenger Cup secured, Flamengo now turn their attention to an even bigger prize. The Brazilian champions will face UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025, scheduled for Wednesday at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, with kick-off set for 8:00 pm local time.

Victory in that clash would see Flamengo close the year as intercontinental champions, capping a truly historic fortnight for the Rio de Janeiro-based club.
