In a significant move to enhance higher education in Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the Federal Government to take over Nok University, located in Kachia, Kaduna State, and transform it into a Federal University. The decision follows a Federal High Court ruling that mandated the forfeiture of the privately-owned institution to the Federal Government.

The newly renamed Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia will officially begin operations in September 2025, with President Tinubu directing the Minister of Education to ensure its inclusion in the 2025 budget. This development marks a key milestone in fulfilling the administration’s promise to the people of Southern Kaduna.

Speaking at the formal handover ceremony, Vice President Kashim Shettima praised the event as a symbol of the administration’s commitment to inclusivity and national progress. He highlighted President Tinubu’s leadership in driving the project, and emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation, quoting civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “We must either learn to live together as brothers, or we are going to die together as fools.”

The handover of the university’s assets from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) included academic buildings, a water factory, an international hotel, and an event center. Shettima expressed gratitude to key figures in the transition process, including General Martin Luther Agwai (rtd), Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, and Senator Sunday Marshall.

The event also saw praise for the significant role played by the Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, who thanked President Tinubu for realizing the dream of a federal university in Southern Kaduna. He emphasized that the university would not only enhance education but also contribute to local economic growth and create job opportunities for the region.

Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, who sponsored the bill for the establishment of the university, expressed his excitement, saying that the university would have a lasting positive impact on Southern Kaduna and beyond. “This university will bring access to quality education, stimulate local economies, and contribute to the region’s social fabric,” he added.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, called the establishment of the university a testament to President Tinubu’s commitment to expanding Nigeria’s human capital through education, health, and welfare.

In his remarks, EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukayode, confirmed the successful transfer of the university’s assets following the court’s judgment and expressed hope that the university would play a pivotal role in the development of the region.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, echoed the sentiments, noting that the establishment of the university would enhance national unity and foster peace in Southern Kaduna. Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd) also celebrated the achievement, calling it a long-awaited and joyous occasion for the people of Southern Kaduna.

The event was attended by several notable figures, including Hon. Daniel Amos, former Supreme Court Justice Kumai Bayang Akaahs, and representatives from the Christian Association of Nigeria, among others.

The Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, promises to become a leading institution of higher learning, contributing to Nigeria’s educational and socio-economic growth.
