The Nigerian Press Council (NPC) is set to convene a national summit on fake news and misinformation as part of efforts to strengthen ethical journalism and restore public confidence in the Nigerian media.
The 2026 National Summit, scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, will focus on the theme, “Curbing Fake News and Misinformation in the Nigerian Media Space.”
The summit comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over the rapid spread of unverified information and disinformation through digital and social media platforms and their potential impact on Nigeria’s socio-political development.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, is expected to serve as Chief Host, while the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, will chair the occasion.
A philanthropist and political leader, Chief Barrister Success Obioma Akagburuonye, is billed to deliver the keynote address, while the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, is expected to speak on the dangers posed by fake news and misinformation.
The event will bring together media professionals, policymakers, government officials, electoral officers, security agencies, academics, civil society organisations, women and youth groups, among other stakeholders.
According to the Council, discussions will centre on ethical journalism, fact-checking, media accountability, responsible use of digital platforms and measures to rebuild public trust in the media.
The summit is also expected to produce practical recommendations and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in tackling the spread of false and misleading information across the country.
A major highlight of the event will be the Nigerian Press Council National Awards, which will recognise individuals who have demonstrated excellence, leadership and significant contributions to national development in governance, entrepreneurship, journalism, academia and entertainment.
Governor Uzodimma is among the personalities listed for recognition, with the council set to honour him as Best Performing Governor of the Year for his leadership and contributions to the development of Imo State and Nigeria.
The award also recognises his reported support for media development and promotion of effective public communication.
Speaking on the summit and awards, the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the NPC, Dr. Dili Ezughah, said the event would provide an important platform for stakeholders to address challenges confronting the media while celebrating individuals contributing to national development.
Ezughah reaffirmed the council’s commitment to promoting professionalism, ethical journalism, accountability and public confidence in the Nigerian media.
He urged media practitioners, government officials, academics, private-sector players, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to participate actively in the summit and contribute to building a more credible and responsible media industry in Nigeria.
