‎Former Super Eagles head coach, Clemens Westerhof, is reportedly critically ill at Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem, Netherlands, after doctors diagnosed him with colon cancer.

    ‎

‎His wife, Lilian Westerhof, disclosed that the 86-year-old Dutch tactician was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after his health deteriorated. Blueprint reported the development.

    ‎

‎Lilian said the diagnosis had devastated the family, appealing for prayers and support as her husband battles the illness.

    ‎

‎“The doctor just told us he has colon cancer and we are all devastated. He is in a critical condition and emotional, talking about our two daughters. He wants to live. We need help. We need prayers,” she said.

    ‎

‎Westerhof has reportedly also been living with Alzheimer’s disease, adding to concerns about his health.

    ‎

‎His wife expressed dissatisfaction with the care he was receiving at the Arnhem hospital and said she hoped to arrange his transfer to a medical facility in Amsterdam or Germany for further treatment.

    ‎

‎“They appear to have given up. I don’t understand,” she said.

    ‎

‎The family’s appeal has renewed attention on the Dutch coach’s contribution to Nigerian football, particularly his role in transforming the Super Eagles into one of Africa’s leading national teams during his tenure from 1989 to 1994.

    ‎

‎Westerhof remains one of the most influential coaches in Nigeria’s football history, having guided the Super Eagles to their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 1994.

    ‎

‎Nigeria qualified for the tournament in the United States after years of unsuccessful attempts to reach football’s biggest stage.

    ‎

‎Under his leadership, the Super Eagles also won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, ending a 14-year wait for another continental title.

    ‎

‎Nigeria defeated Zambia 2-1 in the final, with Emmanuel Amuneke scoring both goals to secure the trophy.

    ‎

‎Westerhof built a formidable squad featuring some of the country’s finest footballers, including Rashidi Yekini, Daniel Amokachi, Finidi George, Emmanuel Amuneke, Sunday Oliseh, Austin Okocha, and Stephen Keshi.

    ‎

‎The Super Eagles finished runners-up at the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations and claimed bronze in 1992 before winning the competition two years later.

    ‎

‎Nigeria also climbed to fifth in the FIFA world rankings during Westerhof’s tenure, reflecting the team’s growing stature in international football.

    ‎

‎At the 1994 World Cup, Nigeria topped its group ahead of Argentina, Bulgaria and Greece before losing 2-1 to Italy after extra time in the round of 16.

    ‎

‎Despite the disappointment of elimination, the team’s performances established the Super Eagles as a competitive force on the global stage.

    ‎

‎Westerhof’s achievements remain an important part of Nigeria’s football history, with his influence continuing to feature in discussions about the country’s most successful eras.

    ‎

‎For now, however, attention is firmly on the veteran coach’s health as his family seeks the best possible medical care.

    ‎

‎As of October 17, 2026, the detailed prognosis and treatment plan had not been publicly confirmed in the reports cited.
