John Asekhauno, a notable member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, has voiced allegations of a potential plan to impeach Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu. In a statement released on Wednesday, Asekhauno criticized the purported harassment of Shaibu by Governor Godwin Obaseki at recent state events.

Asekhauno condemned the reported mistreatment as a challenge to democracy, an affront to political legitimacy, and a severe violation of the rights belonging to an elected official.

Addressing Commissioner for Communication and Orientation Chris Osa Nehikhare’s assertion that the deputy governor tends to avoid state functions, Asekhauno revealed that Shaibu was seated an hour ahead of Governor Obaseki’s arrival. Asekhauno, claiming to be an eyewitness, noted that Shaibu attempted to bring his media aides into the event but faced difficulties due to security personnel not granting them access.

Asekhauno hypothesized that these events may have influenced Shaibu’s decision to leave the venue, assuming that he was not required there. He criticized the narrative of the Commissioner, suggesting that it aims to discredit Shaibu and potentially build impeachment charges against him.

Asekhauno also referenced a recent incident where security personnel assigned to Governor Obaseki prevented Deputy Governor Shaibu from greeting the governor at a public event. He characterized such actions as undermining the dignity of those involved and diminishing efforts to foster unity in Edo State.

Asekhauno urged Governor Obaseki to adhere to democratic principles and lead by example. He called for disputes to be resolved through constructive dialogue, rather than resorting to power plays or harassment. Asekhauno emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive and collaborative political environment for the well-being of Edo residents.

Lastly, he demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged incident to ensure appropriate consequences for those responsible. Asekhauno emphasized accountability, transparency, and the fulfillment of campaign promises, urging state leaders to prioritize the interests of the citizens over personal conflicts.
