The Inclusive Cancer Care Research Equity (ICCARE) Consortium for Black Men, has urged men to stand united against the rising cases of prostate cancer globally.

The call was made at a one-day Prostrate Cancer Summit, themed: “United Against Prostate Cancer”, organized by ICCARE Consortium for Black Men, in partnership with the Urology Unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja (FTHL) on Wednesday.

Dr. Ayodeji Ogunmola, a Consultant Urologist and representative of the ICCARE Lokoja Team, highlighted the significance of the summit, which coincided with the global Men’s Health Awareness month.

He said the summit would provide a safe space for men to share their experiences, break down stigmas, ask questions, and learn from experts.

Dr. Ogunmola praised the courage of men living with prostate cancer, acknowledging the challenges they face.

“We are not just talking about awareness in the abstract, we are creating a community, right here in Lokoja.

“It takes strength to face uncertainty, and it takes even greater strength to seek connection while battling prostate cancer,” he said.

Dr. Ogunmola emphasised the importance of regular check-ups, stating that early detection is key to managing the disease.

He warned that lack of proper check-ups is contributing to the rising cases of prostate cancer among black men.

Dr. Ojochide Ebune, the Acting Chief Medical Director of FTHL, commended the organizers for addressing a critical issue that affects human dignity.

He encouraged men to take advantage of the summit’s resources, including talks by expert doctors and healthcare personnel, to learn more about managing prostate cancer.

Dr Taiwo Jones, the Principal Investigator of the Prostate Cancer Transatlantic Consortium (CaPTC) Lokoja site, emphasized the vision of the founder of both the CaPTC and the iCCaRE Consortium for Black Men , Professor Folakemi Odedina of Mayo Clinic USA.

Jones noted Professor Odedina’s team has worked tirelessly to reduce the disparities and inequalities associated with prostate cancers in black men.

Dr Abimbola Adesanya, a Consultant public health expert, stressed the importance of educating and motivating men to seek help and support.

She stressed that the summit, aimed to raise awareness and reduce stigmas associated with the disease, which affects millions of men worldwide.

Participants, including Benjamin Alamogu and Abdulzeez Ibrahim, expressed gratitude for the initiative, saying it would help them manage their health status and reduce the stigma associated with prostate cancer.

The summit featured a team of urologists and specialists who provided clear and understandable information about prostate cancer and treatment options.

The summit also saw the launch of a Prostate Cancer Support Group, a “sustained brotherhood” where men can find strength, share practical tips, and draw encouragement from others who understand their journey.

The summit further witnessed the launch by the Urology Unit of FTH Lokoja, a Patient Information leaflet on Prostate Cancer, an Information resource where people and patients can get quick information about Prostate Cancer.

The summit ended with a call to action, urging men to prioritize their health and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms.
