The Federal High Court (FHC) of Nigeria, established on April 13, 1973, recently marked its 50th anniversary, reflecting on its impact and evolution. Initially known as the Federal Revenue Court (FRC), it began with five pioneering judges, including Justice Jemonu Omoigberai Eboh, Justice Adeitan Ayinde Adediran, Justice Mahmud Babatunde Belgore, Justice Frederick Okwudi Anyaegbunam, and Justice Sigismund Olanrewaju Lambo as the president.

Over the years, the FHC’s jurisdiction expanded significantly, encompassing various legal matters beyond its original focus on revenue-related cases. The court, now known as the Federal High Court, has played a crucial role in shaping legal interpretation, influencing the legal system, and dispensing justice in Nigeria.

Justice John Tsoho, the current Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, highlighted the court’s growth from one court and five judges to 38 judicial divisions and 95 judges. The court, which moved its headquarters to Abuja in 2010, now has court buildings in all 36 states of Nigeria.

    Key Achievements and Innovations:

    1. *Ultra-Modern Courtroom Complex:* A significant achievement is the near-completion of a modern 20-courtroom complex on Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

    2. *Jurisdictional Expansions:* The court’s jurisdiction has expanded over the years through legislative amendments, and it currently holds exclusive jurisdiction in various legal matters.

    3. *Technological Integration:* The FHC has embraced technology, introducing an e-filing system, electronic display systems, and verbatim reporters (stenographers) in courtrooms.

    4. *Practice Directions:* The Chief Judge, Justice Tsoho, issued several Practice Directions, including those addressing COVID-19 challenges, exemption of payment of default fees during strikes, and specific directions for cases involving organizations like AMCON, FIRS, and EFCC.

    5. *Landmark Judgments and Legal Reforms:* The FHC has been at the forefront of legal innovation, delivering landmark judgments and contributing to progressive legal reforms.

    6. *Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre:* The establishment of an Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre has further enhanced the court’s ability to provide speedy and quality administration of justice.

Justice Tsoho emphasized the court’s commitment to dispensing justice with integrity, competence, and speed. He acknowledged the contributions of past and present judges, recognizing their sacrifices and dedication to upholding the rule of law.

In commemorating the 50th anniversary, various legal practitioners and dignitaries praised the FHC’s role in justice delivery. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, described the court as the best among federal courts and advised judges to be diligent and thorough in their work.

The celebration also included a Thanksgiving Service at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Abuja, where the Archbishop, Ignatius Kaigama, urged judges to deliver justice with the fear of God.

As the FHC looks back on its 50 years of existence, it remains a central institution in Nigeria’s legal landscape, contributing significantly to the administration of justice and the development of jurisprudence in the country.
