Bayero university, Kano, on Monday has inducted about 80 newly qualified medical doctors and dentists after a prolong eight years academic session. Essentially, 68 doctors (MBBS) and 12 dentists (BDS) both of 2015 set.
Addressing the newly inducted doctors, the Vice Chancellor, Bayero University Kano, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas lauded the dedication and dexterity of the young doctors for scaling through the rigor of six years clinical program.
Professor Abbas enjoyed the doctors to rededicate themselves to national development and humanity while carrying out their professional duty, pleaded on them to disassociate their focus on the popular “Japa” syndrome.
Represented by DVC, academics, Professor MS Gumel, the VC wanted the new breed to uphold all sense of dignity and sanctity to human life while discharging their entrusted responsibility.
A medical elder of the occasion and head of infectious unit, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Dr. Fatima Hassan Hanga reminded the doctors to see the induction into the medical field as beginning of knowledge search.
Dr. Hanga stressed that good communication and listening skill is critical to effective and right patients’ diagnosis and management just as she warned any temptation of diagnosing patients outside health facility.
On his part, the registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi disclosed that Nigeria institutions have produced best medical practitioners who are competing favorably with global counterparts.
He however expressed displeasure on the quality of foreign trained doctors who are returning home to write the council’s qualified examination.
The MDCN registrar said that majority of doctors who were trained abroad would rather be compelled to write for, and pass the council’s qualified examination, regardless of the number of period; insisted council will not subdue standard provisions for certification of doctors in the country.
Dr. Sanusi who stressed on the negative impact of brain drain of doctors despite the acute shortage, urged Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital AKTH, to accommodate not less than 60 fresh doctors for 12 month internship. He noted that absorbing the young doctors remain one of the solution against brain drain syndrome.
Dr. Sanusi who cautioned the young doctors culture on dedication and commitment to patients, reminded that doctors on internship are not expected to belong to Union of Doctors. He warned of negative implication on any doctor on internship joining strike or protest action in hospital.
Meanwhile, seven female grandaunts who demonstrated exceptional academic excellence and dominated their male counterparts were recognized before the large crowd.
Top among those recognized for academic distinction are Dr. Hadiza Bello Damagum best student in Pharmacology, Anatomy and Pediatric, Zainab Yahaya best in Pathology and Khadiza Ibrahim Oiza best in community medicine and Pediatric.
Others are Habiba Hassan best graduating student in dentistry, Jemila Jemil Adam overall graduating student, Fatima Ahmad best in Medicine and surgery.
