APC blasts Makinde, labels “Operation Wetie” reckless and dangerous

    Published on

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State over remarks he made at an opposition summit in Ibadan, accusing him of inciting violence and threatening national security.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party described Makinde’s reference to “Operation Wetie” as reckless and dangerous.

The party said it was disturbing that a sitting governor, who doubles as the chief security officer of his state, would invoke a violent episode in Nigeria’s political history.

“The APC categorically condemns Governor Makinde’s incitement as reckless, and a clear and present threat to peace and national security,” the statement read.

The party urged security and intelligence agencies to take the development seriously and act to protect lives and property.

It warned that Makinde’s comments could fuel unrest and lawlessness if left unchecked.

“His statement risks fueling anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness capable of undermining national stability,” the APC stated.

The party also stressed that constitutional immunity does not absolve public officials from accountability for actions that could threaten national security.

It maintained that no individual, regardless of position, should make statements capable of endangering lives or destabilising democratic governance.

The APC further dismissed claims by opposition parties about Nigeria drifting into a one-party state, describing such narratives as misleading.

It argued that opposition parties were grappling with internal crises caused by poor leadership, factionalisation and disregard for due process.

The party specifically referenced the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and African Democratic Congress, accusing them of failing to provide a credible alternative to the ruling government.

Reaffirming its position, the APC said it remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions and delivering on its governance agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Our democracy is founded on competing visions. The failure of opposition leaders to articulate alternatives is theirs, not ours,” the statement added.
