APM Terminals Apapa has reported a notable increase in its half-year (H1 2024) export figures for non-oil cargo, reaching 51,000 Twenty Equivalent Units (TEUs). This marks a 7.8% year-on-year increase from the 47,000 TEUs recorded in the same period in 2023.

Steen Knudsen, Terminal Manager at APM Terminals Apapa, emphasized the significance of non-oil exports to the terminal’s operations. He noted that export volumes have steadily grown over the past four years, with figures rising from 53,000 TEUs in 2020 to 94,000 TEUs in 2023, representing a 32% increase.

To further support this growth, APM Terminals Apapa is set to host its second exporters’ forum in September. Knudsen stated, “The exporters’ forum is our way of supporting the Federal Government’s non-oil export drive. It serves as a brainstorming session with various exporting associations to tackle challenges and enhance the efficiency of export movements to the ports.”

He highlighted the economic benefits of increased exports, noting that more exports lead to lower shipping costs, as vessels can avoid returning empty. The forum aims to foster collaboration among terminal operators, export customers, and shipping lines to address issues affecting the flow of export cargo.

Kayode Daniels, Head of Commercial at APM Terminals Apapa, shared that the first forum, launched in June 2024, was a resounding success, providing valuable insights from exporters on streamlining processes to boost export volumes. He stressed the importance of timely export, especially for agro-produce, where prolonged container storage can compromise cargo quality.

“The feedback we receive during the forum will help improve our operations and enhance the export of non-oil products. I believe that by working together, we can strengthen the port’s export processes,” Daniels concluded.
