Anambra by-election: APC lament supporters, journalists’ intimidation, brutalisation

    Published on

Anambra state chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Sir Basil Ejidike and governorship candidate for the November 8 election, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, have lamented intimidation and harassment of members by Agunechemba security outfit during Saturday’s by-election in the state.
The APC chieftains in a joint press conference yesterday, at the state party secretariat opposite government house in Awka, said the results that gave the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA victory were fake.
The duo said if nothing is done by the Inspector General of Police, IGP, that November 8 governorship election will be a different thing all together.
Both alleged that the APC Senatorial candidate, Azuka Okwuosa could not vote nor come out of his house in Oraifite, Ekwusigo local government area because over 200 armed Agunechemba security outfit invaded his gate and were shooting non-stop.
“Close to 800 of the security operatives were unleashed in the state and were harassing and intimidating voters, including 18 journalists who were beaten and detained for over three hours without seeing Police anywhere close.
“I had to drive to the scene to rescue the journalists when I was contacted. It would have been bloody if I had allowed my security and APC supporters to engage them,” Ukachukwu said.
Some of the journalists were from the Guardian, TVC, Silver bird, Daily Independent, Authority Newspaper, Anambra Broadcasting Service, People’s Daily, among others.
This, according to Ukachukwu was despite all the State government’s shenanigans to make the world believe that APC lost the election and Ukachukwu in his ward.
“It’s a very well known aspect of our electoral jurisprudence that it’s an offence for anyone, no matter how highly placed to veer off his community into another person’s community on an election day,” he added.
The two key politicians disclosed that their discreet investigations revealed that reason why 18 journalists were harassed, beaten up and detained under gunpoint was to prevent them from reporting to the world the massive fraud they saw.
“While we urge our supporters to remain calm, we sincerely urge the INEC and the relevant security agencies, as well as the Presidency to respectfully be mindful of this strange brand of politics as it’s clearly an evil that’s not good for anyone now or in future” Ejidike and Ukachukwu said.
Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, however debunked the claims, saying it was the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Felix Odimegwu that was rather was beaten up on the election day by APC chieftains.

He said what APGA showed during the by-election was capacity, describing the party as a movement in the state.
