The United Kingdom (UK) High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, and the Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever, have met with some political leaders and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The UK High Commission disclosed this in a statement posted on its 𝕏 handle on Thursday.

According to the Commission, the engagements were part of efforts to support Nigeria’s democratic process and promote credible elections.

Those visited included the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu; the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar; the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi; and the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan.

According to TVC News, the visits centred on developments in Nigeria’s political and democratic processes ahead of the next general elections.

The UK High Commission said it looked forward to working with political parties and the international community to support inclusive and credible elections in Nigeria.

The statement read, “We look forward to working with all parties and the international community to support inclusive and credible elections.”

The engagements come as political parties intensify preparations, coalition talks and internal realignments ahead of the 2027 polls.
