‎The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suffered another major defection ahead of the 2027 general elections with the resignation of its National Assistant Secretary and North East Zonal Secretary, Hassan Muhammadu.

‎Muhammadu announced his exit in a resignation letter dated September 9, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of ADC in Bojude Ward, Kwami Local Government Area of Gombe State.

‎In a copy of the letter made available to journalists on Sunday, he said he had, after “deep reflection”, decided to withdraw his membership of the party and resign from all positions held at both national and zonal levels.

‎“It is with deep reflection and esteemed regard that I wish to withdraw my membership from the ADC and also resign my position as the National Assistant Secretary and the Zonal Secretary of the North East Zonal Working Committee of the Party,” he wrote.

‎The former ADC chieftain thanked the party and its leaders for the opportunity to serve.

‎He said copies of the letter had been forwarded to the National Chairman, Senator David Mark, through North East Zonal Chairman, Daniel Modu Bwala, as well as to the Gombe State leadership and the North East Zonal Working Committee.

‎Muhammadu, a former Commissioner for Finance in Gombe State, said he would announce his next political move in the coming days.

‎However, sources close to him said he is being courted by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and could join the party to support its governorship candidate in Gombe State, Dr Jamilu Isiyaku Gwamna.

‎Party insiders said if confirmed, the move would strengthen APC’s structure in Kwami Local Government Area and other parts of Gombe Central, a key battleground ahead of 2027.

‎Sources within Gwamna’s camp described Muhammadu as a significant political asset, citing his experience and previous roles at both national and zonal levels of the ADC.

‎The resignation comes amid intensified political realignments nationwide as parties reposition for 2027.

‎The ADC, one of the opposition platforms seeking to challenge the ruling APC, has in recent months attracted big names, but it’s also grappling with internal disagreements and defections.
