The Chief Judge of Bayelsa Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye on Friday expressed the safe rescue of Hon. Justice E.G. Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court.
Abrakasa noted that Omukoro, who was abducted on June 21 had been held captive under distressing circumstances.
Omukoro who presides over Bayelsa High Court 7 at the Bayelsa Judiciary Headquarters was rescued on Thursday by a combined effort of the Police, Department of State Security Services.
In a statement issued by Julius Nyananyo, Head of Media and Information of the Bayelsa State Judiciary, the successful outcome is attributed to the tireless efforts of the Government of Bayelsa State, security agencies, the Bar, organisations, community leaders, and the Judiciary family.
“The Chief Judge extends her gratitude to everyone involved in securing Hon. Justice Omukoro’s safe return.
“Special commendation goes to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kuditat Kekere-Ekun, GCON, and members of the National Judicial Council. Senator Douye Diri, Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, the State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and Rt. Hon. Ingobere Abraham, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, for their pivotal roled.
“The security agencies, particularly the DSS, the Nigeria Police, Bayelsa State Command, among others, for their strategic operations, synergy, and dedication.
“His Lordship conveys sincere appreciation to the Nigerian Bar Association, with particular recognition of the dedicated leadership of Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, National President of the NBA,” the Chief Judge of Bayelsa stated..
The Bayelsa Chief Judge also acknowledges the support of the Yenagoa and Sagbama branches of the NBA, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, various organizations, and respected community leaders for their meaningful contributions.
The Chief Judge noted that deep gratitude is further extended to the family and loved ones of Justice Omukoro, whose strength, patience, and cooperation remain deeply valued.
Abrakasa observed that the operation underscores the power of collaboration, patience, and professionalism in resolving such delicate situations.
He further said: “As we celebrate this positive outcome, we remain committed to addressing the root causes of such incidents and further ensuring the safety of all Judicial officers in the State.
“We are happy to state that Justice Omukoro is now receiving medical and psychological support and requests privacy during this period of recovery.
“The Bayelsa State Judiciary expressed profound appreciation for the outpouring of support and urges the public to remain vigilant, continuing to support the government’s and security agencies’ efforts to promote peace and security in the State,” Abrakasa stated.
