Action Alliance, AA presidential candidate, Hon. Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, escaped unhurt at the weekend after political thugs disrupted a funeral and attacked his entourage in Ekusa, Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State.
Omoaje, accompanied by the AA State Chairman, Hon. Kazeem Araoye and other party leaders were attending the burial of his friend’s mother when the event descended into chaos.
Trouble reportedly began after Omoaje mounted the rostrum to dance to music by highlife artiste, Olu Mighty.
While the musician was hailing the presidential candidate, members of the Accord Party led by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Affairs allegedly stormed the stage, attempting to take it over.
All Progressives Congress, APC, members soon joined the fray and objected to the praise for Omoaje while a war of words between the two groups was said to have quickly escalated into a brawl on the stage.
Witnesses said armed thugs allegedly loyal to both the APC and Accord were seen brandishing cutlasses, knives, and charms during the clash.
AA loyalists moved swiftly to shield the presidential candidate and hustled him out of the venue before he could be harmed while several members of his entourage fled for safety amid the melee.
Condemning the attack, Omoaje described the incident as “dastardly” and blamed it on rising political intolerance in the state.
He called on security agencies to secure lives and property ahead of the August 16, 2026 Osun governorship election.
“Acts capable of causing trouble in the state and the country at large ahead of the next general elections must stop,” he warned.
