The Wachakal airstrip in Nguru, Yobe State, is now 85% completed, according to the Federal Government (FG).
Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace, made this announcement during a test flight conducted on the airstrip. He emphasized that the completion of the project will bring about significant reforms in the aviation sector while improving livelihoods.
Engr. Clement Olayinka Awogbami, the Director of Aerodrome Development, who represented the Permanent Secretary, acknowledged the challenges faced during the project, including inflation and limited resources. However, he commended the commitment and dedication to reforming the aviation sector.
Awogbami explained that the airstrip design includes Doppler Very High Frequency Omni Range (DVOR) equipment, which will guide aircraft during landing. However, due to the foreign component involved in its manufacturing, the installation of the DVOR will take some time and is expected to be completed within the next three months.
Highlighting the economic benefits of the project, Awogbami mentioned that it will enhance security surveillance, support VIP movements, facilitate medical evacuations in emergencies, and contribute to agricultural activities. He expressed confidence that the completed airstrip will positively impact the country’s GDP.
The Emir of Nguru, Alhaji Mustapha Ibn Mai Kyari, expressed gratitude to the federal government for the project, noting its potential to boost the local economy and reduce unemployment among youths.
Hassan Daliru, the Vice Chairman of Karasuwa Local Government, also thanked the former Senate President and the federal government for attracting development to the state. He expressed optimism for further infrastructural advancements in Yobe State.
