The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has initiated the establishment of a laboratory aimed at addressing counterfeiting and other forms of infractions. The Acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has commenced the process with a commitment to implementing strategies that enhance customs operations.

The laboratory will be equipped to accurately identify, verify, and classify goods, providing comprehensive solutions to combat challenges such as counterfeit goods, smuggling, and non-compliant imports. This initiative will bolster revenue generation while ensuring the protection of public health and safety.

The establishment of the laboratory will facilitate efficient enforcement measures, informed decision-making, and foster an environment of trust and credibility within Nigeria’s trade ecosystem. It will also contribute to enhancing trade competitiveness and national economic growth, aligning with the vision of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Acting Comptroller-General Adeniyi has engaged in strategic discussions with the World Customs Organization (WCO) to improve service delivery. Additionally, discussions are underway with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Customs Administration to further enhance the laboratory’s capabilities.

In his engagements, Adeniyi has focused on conducting Time Release Studies (TRS), implementing the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) program, and leadership and management development. He aims to leverage cutting-edge technologies while building upon previous achievements to redefine customs practices.

The appointment of Acting Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi was announced during his attendance at the Policy Commission and Council meetings of the WCO in Brussels, Belgium. Utilizing this global platform, he participated in topical discussions within the global Customs community, advocating for the exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven solutions to enhance communication, decision-making, and enforcement operations.
