Renowned footballer Lionel Messi received a warm welcome from enthusiastic fans as he arrived in Beijing, China by private jet on Saturday. The Argentine superstar, who led his country to victory in the World Cup, is scheduled to participate in a friendly match against Australia next week.

During an interview with Chinese media on a local streaming platform, Messi shared his thoughts on the World Cup, the Ballon d’Or, and his relationship with Pep Guardiola. When asked about the prestigious Ballon d’Or award, Messi expressed a relaxed attitude, stating, “At this stage of my career, if I receive it, that’s great, but if I don’t, it doesn’t affect me. The Ballon d’Or is no longer important to me. I’ve always believed that individual accolades are secondary, while the collective achievements hold greater significance. For me, the ultimate prize is the World Cup. It represents the pinnacle of success.”

Furthermore, Messi confirmed his previous statements about not participating in the next World Cup, reiterating, “I have not changed my mind. Although I would love to be there as a spectator, I will not be participating. Having secured the World Cup trophy that eluded me, I am content and grateful for the remarkable career I have had. That is what matters most to me.”

When asked about his relationship with Pep Guardiola, Messi affirmed their continued contact and praised the coach, saying, “Yes, we are still in touch. Guardiola deserves to win the Champions League; he is the best coach in the world.”

The Chinese fans displayed their adoration for Messi, giving him a rockstar welcome upon his arrival. Hundreds of supporters gathered outside his hotel, which is situated near the picturesque Liangma River, a popular destination for locals. This marks Messi’s seventh visit to China, with his last trip taking place in 2017.

Argentina, the reigning world champions, will engage in a friendly match against Australia on June 15 at Beijing’s newly renovated Workers’ Stadium, which boasts a seating capacity of 68,000.

As part of his current tour, Messi, who recently departed Paris Saint-Germain to join Inter Miami, will also participate in another friendly match against Indonesia in Jakarta on June 19.
