    Godswill Akpabio, the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, emerged victorious in the election for the position of Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly Senate President, securing 63 votes. His opponent, Abdul’aziz Yari, the former Governor of Zamfara State, received 46 votes. The social media sphere presented a mixed array of reactions to this development. Some commended the democratic process and acknowledged Senator Yari’s challenge, while others voiced concerns regarding corruption allegations against Senator Akpabio and potential executive interference in the selection of the Senate President. Senator Akpabio’s political journey has been remarkable, encompassing roles as a governor, senator, Senate Minority Leader, and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, culminating in his election as the President of the Senate.Godswill Akpabio, the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, has emerged as the new President of the Senate in Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly, defeating his challenger Abdul’aziz Yari, the former Governor of Zamfara State. Senator Akpabio, who previously served as the Senate Minority Leader and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, secured 63 votes, while Yari received 46 votes.

    Following the election, social media platforms witnessed a diverse range of reactions. Morris Monye expressed appreciation for the democratic process and admired Senator Yari for standing his ground, highlighting the beauty of democracy.

    Zahrah Musa emphasized the importance of a National Assembly that maintains a harmonious relationship with the executive, referring to the past tenure of Senator Saraki. She expressed relief at Akpabio’s victory and hoped for peace and progress.

    Foundational Nupe Lawyer applauded Akpabio for his resilience despite being the favored candidate, believing he would bring about positive Senate leadership. Shehu Gazali Sadiq, however, raised concerns about Akpabio’s pending corruption cases with the EFCC and criticized his election as Senate President. Jante commemorated the day of Akpabio’s victory and congratulated the triumph of democracy.

    Ayobami expressed satisfaction with Akpabio’s election but voiced concerns about the excessive interference of the executive in influencing the selection process of the Senate President, highlighting the negative impact on legislative autonomy.

    Godswill Akpabio’s political journey includes serving as a commissioner in Akwa Ibom State, two terms as Governor of Akwa Ibom, election as a senator, appointment as Senate Minority Leader, and a term as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs. On June 13, 2023, he was elected as the 10th President of the Senate.
