The Labour Party has declared that no nation grows with hungry teachers, describing them as the bastion of the nation’s knowledge and learning.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, to felicitate Nigerian teachers on World Teachers’ Day, the party said they play a pivotal role in moulding children and youths into future leaders.
It, however, expressed regret over the current position of Nigerian teachers in society, noting that they are still agitating for better learning conditions for children and improved working conditions for themselves.
Labour Party assured teachers that it stands firmly by them, urging them not to waver in their faith in the party.
The party said its shared history through the Labour Movement to the birth of Labour Party makes it the pathway to improved welfare for teachers.
As the 2027 elections approach, the party urged teachers to stand firmly by its candidates across all elective positions nationwide.
Labour Party said it has proven to be the vehicle best positioned to advance teachers’ interests and secure the dignified future they deserve.
It cited Abia State where Governor Alex Otti has fulfilled campaign promises to teachers, saying the feat will be replicated across all states when its candidates are voted into office.
The party called on those in authority to take a critical look at the pitiable condition of teachers and declare a National State of Emergency in the teaching sector.
According to the party, no nation can genuinely grow where those entrusted with moulding future generations are ill-equipped, poorly motivated and inadequately rewarded.
It said the nation must prioritise training and retraining of teachers while paying attention to learning conditions of children and welfare of teachers.
”When it is said that a teacher’s reward is in heaven, it does not suggest that teachers should be starved to death,” the party said, reaffirming its commitment to a Nigeria where teachers are respected and adequately rewarded.
