An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Kogi State, John Okolo, has said the appointment of Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has boosted President Bola Tinubu’s political fortunes in the North Central geo-political region.
Okolo spoke in Lokoja on Wednesday, linking the 2025 appointment of Shaibu, a Kogi indigene, to growing support for Tinubu ahead of 2027.
Shaibu became COAS after holding key operational positions, including Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai.
Okolo said the appointment has strengthened the sense of inclusion among people of Kogi and the wider North Central.
He described it as more than a military posting, saying it shows recognition of the region’s contribution to national service.
”The appointment of Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu means a lot to the North Central and to Kogi people. This is an opportunity we will not take for granted,” he said.
He urged voters in Kogi East, especially the Igala community, to support Tinubu’s re-election, saying the zone has gained greater national representation.
Okolo also attributed improved security operations in parts of the North Central to Shaibu’s leadership, citing faster response and better coordination.
The politician claimed traditional rulers and community leaders have reported fewer attacks and improved engagement with security agencies.
He pointed to federal projects in the state, including the ongoing barracks construction in Anyigba and rural interventions, as additional factors shaping political sentiment ahead of 2027 general elections.
