It is with a heart filled with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that I mourn the passing of an illustrious son of Adamawa, an elder statesman, a distinguished businessman, and a true patriot, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
His passing is not merely the loss of a great individual. It is the loss of a generation of leadership, wisdom, experience, and service. It is a painful moment for his beloved Adamawa State, for Nigeria, and for the countless people whose lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was, first and foremost, a son of Adamawa who carried the hopes, dignity and aspirations of his people wherever his path took him. From his roots in our state, he rose to occupy places of great responsibility and influence, leaving his imprint on business, public administration, politics and national development.
For many of us from Adamawa, his story was a source of immense pride.
He reminded us that a person could come from our soil, rise through determination and courage, and make a difference not only in our state but across the entire nation. His journey represented what was possible when vision was matched with courage, discipline and an enduring commitment to service.
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur lived a life of consequence.
His contributions to Nigeria’s maritime and business sectors demonstrated his capacity to think beyond his time. His leadership at the Nigerian Ports Authority reflected a commitment to discipline, innovation and national development. In business, he demonstrated the possibilities that existed for Nigerians who dared to dream, build and compete beyond our shores.
But beyond the offices he occupied, the companies he built and the positions he held, there was something even more important — the man himself.
He was an elder.
He was a mentor.
He was a father figure to many.
He was a man whose experience carried wisdom and whose presence commanded respect.
His political journey was equally significant. From his service as Governor of the old Gongola State to his later role as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political history.
Yet, to reduce his life to titles and political positions would be to miss the greater meaning of his legacy.
Leadership, as he demonstrated, is ultimately measured by the lives one touches and the difference one leaves behind.
He belonged to a generation that understood the weight of public service and the responsibility that comes with being entrusted with the affairs of others. He understood that leadership required sacrifice, patience, courage and, above all, a commitment to something greater than oneself.
Today, as we mourn him, we are reminded that the greatest tragedy of losing an elder is not simply that a life has ended. It is that a repository of experience, memories, wisdom and history has been taken from us.
There are conversations that will never happen again.
There are stories that will no longer be told in his voice.
There is wisdom that a younger generation will now have to seek elsewhere.
And there is a space that his passing has left behind that cannot easily be filled.
For Adamawa, this loss cuts particularly deep.
We have lost one of our own — a man whose journey from Adamawa to the highest levels of national life demonstrated the extraordinary potential of our people.
His story belongs to Adamawa. His service belongs to Nigeria. His legacy belongs to generations yet unborn.
As I reflect on his passing, I am filled not only with sadness but also with gratitude — gratitude that Nigeria was privileged to have a man of his experience and stature serve the nation, and gratitude that Adamawa produced a son whose name became known far beyond the borders of our state.
May we not remember Alhaji Bamanga Tukur only for the positions he occupied or the institutions he led.
May we remember him for his vision, his courage, his generosity, his mentorship, his humanity and his unwavering belief in the possibilities of Nigeria.
May we remember the lives he influenced.
May we remember the young people he encouraged.
May we remember the leaders he mentored.
And may we remember the example he left behind.
Today, Adamawa mourns. Nigeria mourns.
I mourn with the Tukur family, his friends, associates, colleagues and all those who had the privilege of knowing and learning from him.
At a moment such as this, words seem inadequate. No collection of words can truly capture the magnitude of losing an elder of such stature.
We can only bow our heads in gratitude for a life that was lived in service and pray that the Almighty will grant him the eternal peace he deserves.
May Almighty God forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, reward his years of service to humanity and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus.
May God give his family the strength to bear this immeasurable loss.
May He comfort the people of Adamawa.
May He comfort Nigeria.
And may the memory of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur remain a blessing to all who knew him.
He came from Adamawa.
He served Nigeria.
He touched many lives.
And he leaves behind a legacy that time will not easily erase.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
