Transmission Company of Nigeria TCN has commenced rehabilitation work on four vandalised towers along the Afam/IPP/Elelenwo 132kV Double Circuit Transmission Line.
The affected towers, identified as T50, T51, T52 and T53, were discovered on August 6, 2026, by TCN linesmen during an inspection of the transmission corridor. According to TCN, further inspection revealed that critical bracing members had been removed from the four towers, thereby compromising their structural integrity and posing a potential threat to the reliable transmission of electricity along the corridor.
The company said it promptly mobilised a contractor to the site to carry out the necessary repairs. A formal handover ceremony was subsequently held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, by the Port Harcourt Transmission Region to mark the commencement of the rehabilitation project.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Head of Lines, Port Harcourt Transmission Region, Engr. Azuh Lucky, who represented TCN Management, called for stronger community involvement in the protection of electricity transmission infrastructure.
Azuh appealed to residents of Elelenwo, traditional rulers and the relevant local government authorities to support TCN’s efforts to combat vandalism and protect transmission facilities in the area. He stressed that sustained community awareness and cooperation were essential to preventing further acts of vandalism and safeguarding the infrastructure after rehabilitation. TCN noted that vandalism of transmission towers poses a significant risk to the reliable supply of electricity along the affected corridor. The company said it was committed to ensuring the timely completion of the rehabilitation works. The power transmission company also urged residents of Elelenwo and neighbouring communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around transmission facilities. It said the cooperation of host communities would be critical to protecting the rehabilitated towers and ensuring reliable power transmission along the Afam/IPP/Elelenwo corridor.
