At least, 37 people have reportedly died in Rivers State after an attempt to siphon crude oil from a loading vessel resulted in the release of toxic fumes.

‎The incident occurred in Nigeria’s oil-producing Niger Delta region.

‎According to the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Center, the victims were allegedly siphoning crude into boats when they were exposed to high-pressure toxic fumes.

‎

‎However, the Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the deaths without giving an official death toll, saying investigations are ongoing.

‎

‎Several people were also reportedly missing following the incident.
