Former Political Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and APC chieftain, Prof Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, has mourned the death of former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Patrick Osertin Osambedwan.
In a condolence statement, Alkali described Osambedwan’s death as a “painful loss” to the journalism profession and the nation, noting his contributions to truth, accountability, public service and democratic governance.
Alkali said he had known and worked closely with the deceased for many years, describing him as a trusted friend, courageous professional and a committed journalist who upheld the ethics and ideals of the profession.
According to him, Osambedwan belonged to a generation of journalists who regarded journalism as a sacred calling dedicated to truth, public enlightenment, accountability and national development.
He also commended the late NUJ FCT chairman for his commitment to press freedom, responsible journalism and the welfare of media practitioners, saying his contributions to strengthening the union would remain indelible.
However, Alkali used the occasion to express concern over what he described as the disturbing and increasing deaths of journalists in the FCT and across Nigeria.
He noted that the media community in the FCT had suffered several painful losses in recent years, stressing that every journalist lost represents the departure of valuable knowledge, experience and professional wisdom.
“This unfortunate trend should serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders to pay greater attention to the welfare, healthcare and overall well-being of journalists and media professionals,” Alkali said.
He urged stakeholders to ensure that journalists, who make significant sacrifices to inform, educate and enlighten society, receive adequate support and care.
While mourning Osambedwan, Alkali urged colleagues and members of the media community to celebrate his legacy of integrity, courage, professionalism, friendship and service to humanity.
He extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, the leadership and members of the NUJ FCT Council, media practitioners, friends and associates of Osambedwan.
Alkali prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and give his family and loved ones the strength and fortitude to bear the loss.
