‎NPFL tasks clubs on using marketing, media strategies to improve revenue

‎The Nigeria Premier Football League has urged football clubs to develop and maintain comprehensive data records to drive marketing and media strategies aimed at improving revenue generation.

‎The NPFL CEO, Davidson Owumi, made the call on Wednesday in Enugu at the NPFL-AFRINVEST Seminar on Marketing, Investment, Brand Merchandising and Media.

‎Owumi said clubs should establish functional websites containing detailed information on players, coaches, club history, performance statistics, match highlights and other relevant records to boost their visibility.

‎He said the NPFL was working towards making clubs commercially viable and less dependent on financial support from state governments.

‎“Good visibility and marketing on social media, mainstream media and other online platforms, well-packaged, will do a lot to sell a club and its branded articles,” he said.

‎Owumi cited the partnership between Rangers International FC and AFRINVEST, which began in 2023, as an example of how strategic collaboration could improve a club’s financial fortunes.

‎He said clubs without functional and innovative marketing and media departments would struggle to survive.

‎The NPFL official urged participants at the seminar to apply the knowledge gained and embrace creativity in promoting their clubs.

‎Also speaking, the manager of AFRINVEST’s Enugu office, Emmanuel Eleojo, congratulated the NPFL and clubs on the successful completion of the 2025/2026 season.

‎Eleojo said AFRINVEST remained committed to providing financial solutions that would strengthen football development in Nigeria.

‎He urged clubs to leverage investment opportunities to expand their operations and unlock the commercial potential of football.

‎“With good investment, players and coaches can focus on their responsibilities, knowing the club has the financial capacity to execute its programmes each season,” he said.

‎In his remarks, the general manager of Rangers International FC, Amobi Ezeaku, commended the NPFL and AFRINVEST for organising the seminar.

‎Ezeaku also appreciated AFRINVEST for partnering with Rangers International FC, saying the collaboration yielded positive results for both organisations.

‎Presenting a paper titled, ‘Monetising NPFL Clubs Through Marketing, Sponsorship and Brand Investment’, George Isitua-Onukwu said many potential sponsors remained hesitant because clubs could not guarantee consistent visibility and quality content.

‎Isitua-Onukwu urged clubs to adopt structured branding and marketing strategies, including a 12-month commercial calendar with clearly defined deadlines, sponsorship renewals, briefs and performance reviews.

‎According to him, supporters identify more strongly with clubs that represent values and aspirations they can relate to.
