APC chairman meets Kano’s lone NDC Senator amid defection rumours

‎National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has met with Senator Rufa’i Sani Hanga, the lone Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senator from Kano State, at his Abuja residence on Wednesday night.

‎According to the senator’s Media Aide, Umar Saminu Mai-Adashi, the meeting was “cordial and constructive,” with both leaders exchanging views on issues of national importance.

‎”Discussions focused on Nigeria’s political landscape and ways of strengthening democratic engagement and national development,” Mai-Adashi said in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page Thursday.

‎The visit has fueled speculations about Senator Hanga’s next political move. This comes after he recently expressed reservations over what he described as ill treatment in the NDC.

‎Hanga, once a staunch ally of former Kano governor and NDC Vice Presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and a prominent figure in the Kwankwasiyya Movement, had complained about being excluded from the party’s consensus candidate lists, a development that sidelined him from the senatorial race.

‎Earlier, a powerful APC delegation led by the party’s Vice Chairman in Kano State, Salisu Maje Ahmad Gwangwazo, had also visited the Senator to woo him. While the party did not promise him the Senatorial ticket, it assured him of “fair” treatment.

‎The APC is said to be keen on consolidating its hold on Kano following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the party, a move Hanga has publicly praised.

‎Although Hanga has not formally announced his defection, Wednesday’s meeting with the APC national chairman is widely seen as a significant signal of possible alignment.
