2027: Obi calls for public disclosure of candidates’ credentials

Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has confirmed he has completed his nomination with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, ahead of the 2027 election, while demanding that all aspirants’ academic credentials be made public.
Obi announced the development in a statement on his verified X handle on Tuesday.
The filing came days after the NDC said his nomination had been uploaded to INEC’s portal, despite ongoing legal proceedings challenging the party’s registration.
NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson, had earlier said Obi’s details were submitted to INEC even after a recent court judgment sought the party’s deregistration.
After completing the process, the former Anambra governor shifted focus to what he called Nigeria’s more urgent problems of insecurity, hunger, and corruption.
He argued that a responsible leadership would treat the country’s worsening security situation, widespread poverty, and alleged diversion of public funds through non-existent agencies as immediate priorities.
Obi urged INEC to publish the academic certificates submitted by all political aspirants.
“Candidates are required in the nomination form to declare whether they have ever presented forged certificates. Making their credentials publicly available would promote accountability,” he said.
“Transparency strengthens democracy and builds public trust. Nigeria’s problems are too serious for politics as usual. It is time for leadership defined by competence, character, capacity, compassion and commitment to service,” Obi stated.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate maintained that Nigeria’s current challenges demand leaders with integrity and competence, not politics driven by personal interests.
