The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has denied reports that its presidential running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is planning to exit the party over recent candidate replacements in Kano State.

The party described the reports as speculation meant to undermine its growing influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in a televised interview at the weekend, NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said Kwankwaso had not threatened to leave the party.

“At no time did our leader, Kwankwaso, threaten to leave the party. Those were just conjectures and media speculations aimed at demarketing the party, and we know where they are coming from,” Director said.

He added that the rumours were being fueled by individuals within and outside the opposition who are uncomfortable with the NDC’s rising momentum.

The clarification follows tensions in the NDC after the replacement of several candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya bloc in Kano.

Media reports had claimed Kwankwaso was displeased with the development and threatened to sever ties if the changes were not reversed.

But party officials said the adjustments were in line with an existing power-sharing arrangement between the NDC leadership and the Kwankwasiyya movement.

A document reportedly signed by Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, stated that the substitutions were to reflect the agreed distribution of party positions and elective tickets between both factions.

Director also cited alleged acts of sabotage within the party, pointing to a constituency in Delta State where an incumbent politician was accused of backing multiple aspirants against the preferred party candidate, Collins Edema.

The NDC has faced reports of internal divisions in recent weeks, especially amid new political alignments involving key opposition figures.

However, party leaders said there is no crisis and that their focus remains on strengthening the party for future electoral contests.

The denial comes as opposition parties intensify consultations and coalition-building ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
