The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has commended the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, for initiatives aimed at expanding digital skills among Nigerian girls.

The commendation was made during the 2026 National Girls in ICT Programme held in Abuja.

The programme, modeled after the global Girls in ICT Day, is designed to increase female participation in information and communication technology.

As part of the event, 185 female students visited the NCC Museum in Abuja.

The commission said the tour exposed the students to the history and evolution of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector and was intended to generate interest in technology-related careers.

The NCC stated that the programme supports federal efforts to deepen digital inclusion and reduce the gender gap in ICT by equipping young girls with relevant technical competencies.

Stakeholders in the technology sector have consistently called for targeted interventions to increase female representation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, STEM. They note that early exposure to ICT influences career choices for girls.

The National Girls in ICT Programme is part of ongoing government and industry initiatives to build a more inclusive digital economy in Nigeria.
