Former Anambra State governor and Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential aspirant, Peter Obi has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan of carrying out the political agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
Obi made the allegation in an interview with News Central TV, excerpts of which were released on Thursday.
According to the former Labour Party presidential candidate, he recently wrote to the INEC chairman to remind him that public office is temporary and to urge him to act in the national interest.
“If anybody had told me that professors would run our elections and things would become worse, I would have said capital no,” Obi said.
He added, “I wrote to the present INEC Chairman and said, ‘Remember, you will not be here forever.’”
Obi further alleged that the electoral body under the current leadership was no longer independent and was acting in line with the presidency’s wishes.
When asked if he believed INEC was working as an agent of the president, he responded, “Yes, completely. Whatever the INEC Chairman is doing today, he is acting the script written by the man who employed him.”
The comments are likely to intensify political debate ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid growing scrutiny of electoral reforms and the independence of key democratic institutions.
