The Chairman, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, has said the Federal Government is weighing policy options to help Nigerian airlines, including Hajj carriers, cushion the impact of rising global aviation fuel costs ahead of the 2026 Hajj.

Speaking against the backdrop of ongoing preparations, Yusuf said the Commission is engaging stakeholders across the aviation sector to ensure a seamless and efficient airlift.

The chairman, according to a statement by the NAHCON’s Deputy Director of Information and Publications, Fatima Sanda Usara, said that discussions on operational logistics, particularly aviation fuel, are a standard part of pre‑Hajj coordination and are being handled within established frameworks.

He dismissed reports suggesting that contracted carriers were reluctant to participate in the Hajj airlift due to high fuel costs, describing such claims as speculative and not reflective of the current level of collaboration between government and operators.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all necessary arrangements are progressing as planned, and the inaugural flight for the 2026 Hajj exercise is scheduled for May 3, 2026,” he stated.

Yusuf explained that the Federal Government’s intervention is designed to strike a balance — preventing airlines from operating at a loss while shielding pilgrims from excessive airfare.

He added that all contracted Hajj carriers have reaffirmed their commitment to safety, efficiency, and a hitch‑free operation, even as engagements with regulators and other stakeholders continue.

Despite prevailing economic pressures, the NAHCON chairman expressed confidence that both outbound and return flights for the 2026 Hajj would be conducted seamlessly.

He reiterated the commission’s optimism that, with sustained government support and effective coordination, Nigerian pilgrims would enjoy a smooth and successful Hajj experience this year.
