The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, was honoured on Friday, April 17, 2026, by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) during activities commemorating its 45th anniversary.

The award, which celebrates individuals who have made notable contributions to national development and youth empowerment, placed Sawyerr among a select group of distinguished Nigerians recognized for their impactful service.

Other prominent recipients included Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin; Minister of Agriculture, Senator Abu Kyari; Minister of Youth Development, Imaan Suleiman; and Ayodele Olawande, among others.

While presenting the award, NANS President, Comrade Olusola Ladoja, stated that the recognition reflects the increasing influence of NELFUND in broadening access to higher education and supporting students financially through its loan scheme.

He noted that under Sawyerr’s leadership, the Fund has continued to advance the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that no qualified Nigerian student is denied education due to financial challenges.

Ladoja added that the honour signifies the appreciation of Nigerian students for ongoing efforts to ease the burden of tuition and living expenses, while promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities across tertiary institutions nationwide.

Over its 45-year history, NANS has remained a strong advocate for Nigerian students, championing policies and initiatives that enhance academic progress and student welfare.
