Makinde Explains PDP Officials’ Meeting with ADC Leaders

    Published on

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday, explained why the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) visited leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after the party’s Occupy INEC protest in Abuja.

Makinde said the visit was to express solidarity with the ADC amid recent developments in the nation’s political space.

The governor spoke with journalists after a meeting between ADC leaders and the PDP faction, which lasted late into the night at the Abuja residence of former Senate President David Mark.

According to him, the visit was informed by recent events, including court actions and the protest staged earlier by the ADC.

“We came here to visit the leadership of ADC. We are on a solidarity visit, and we have seen what has been happening within the political space, the court and protest, so we came to show solidarity and to commit to a clean democratic space in our country,” Makinde said.

The David Mark-led ADC faction and the Turaki-led PDP faction converged on Mark’s residence in Apo, Abuja, for what observers described as a strategic opposition meeting.

Among those present at the meeting were former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; former governors Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, Peter Obi and Babangida Aliyu. Former Minister of Information, Jerry Gana, and PDP National Secretary, Taofeek Arapaja, were also in attendance.

The closed-door meeting came hours after ADC leaders and supporters staged the Occupy INEC protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja, signalling rising political tension and fresh opposition coordination ahead of the 2027 general elections.
