Werder Bremen Confirm Victor Boniface Will Not Play Again This Season After Knee Surgery

    Published on

Werder Bremen have confirmed that Nigerian forward Victor Boniface will not feature again before the end of the season, drawing a line under what has been a frustrating spell for the on-loan striker.

Victor Boniface, 25, who arrived in the summer from Bayer Leverkusen, has been sidelined since December after sustaining a knee injury in training. He later underwent surgery in January in Innsbruck, Austria, under renowned specialist Christian Fink.

Although Boniface has recently resumed light training, Bremen have made it clear there will be no late-season comeback.

Sporting director Peter Niemeyer provided the latest update in an interview with German outlet DeichStube.

“He is finishing his rehabilitation in Leverkusen, and we are pleased with every bit of progress. But it is still impossible to predict when he will be fully fit again,” Niemeyer said.

The statement effectively ends any lingering hope that Boniface might return to boost Bremen’s attack during the run-in.

Still, the Super Eagles striker has shown signs of progress. Naija News reports earlier this week, he shared a short video on 𝕏 of himself working through leg exercises in the gym.

In a typically upbeat caption, he wrote, “Help me post this one too, I dey training.” The clip quickly drew messages of encouragement from supporters eager to see him back in action.

Boniface’s spell at Bremen has been stop-start. He managed 11 Bundesliga appearances, registering two assists but failing to find the net. Those outings will now stand as his final contribution for the club this term.

The injury setback added to what has been a testing period in his career. He had previously missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) through injury and was also unavailable for Bremen’s January 2026 league fixture against Borussia Dortmund due to complications in his recovery programme.

Away from the pitch, Boniface has been candid about the emotional strain of his struggles. In one social media post during his rehabilitation, he admitted to “putting on a fake smile for over a year now,” before adding, “Only God knows why all that is happening to me.”
