The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has celebrated its inaugural year, reflecting on significant progress and key achievements since its establishment in April 2025. In his end-of-year message, Managing Director/CEO Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, FNSE, described the past year as one of “purposeful transition and remarkable transformation.”

Engr. Mohammed praised the collective efforts of staff, government institutions, and industry stakeholders in laying the groundwork for Nigeria’s new national system operator. “Building a new national institution is never easy,” he remarked, acknowledging the challenges faced during the initial months. “However, our team has shown remarkable professionalism and resilience.”

Under NISO’s leadership, the organization has made notable strides in grid operations, regional cooperation, and the deployment of modern tools to enhance system visibility. A standout achievement was Nigeria’s historic regional grid synchronization under the West African Power Pool (WAPP), marking the first time the country’s power system operated in real-time synchrony with the regional grid for four continuous hours.

“This landmark achievement opens doors for regional power trade, boosts collective energy security, and establishes Nigeria as a key player in regional electricity cooperation,” Engr. Mohammed stated.

The Managing Director reported significant improvements in grid stability, highlighting fewer disturbances compared to previous years and better management of system events. He credited these advancements to the dedication of system operators and effective collaboration with market participants.

“These improvements are crucial for strengthening the resilience of the grid and reinforcing confidence in NISO’s mandate,” he added.

Beyond technical successes, Engr. Mohammed emphasized the importance of staff welfare and development. He highlighted advancements in training, promotions, and welfare support, demonstrating NISO’s commitment to fairness and transparency.

He expressed gratitude to various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Power, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and development partners, for their support throughout NISO’s formative year.

As NISO prepares for 2026, the organization aims to build on its achievements by enhancing operations and fostering an enabling work environment. “NISO is not just an institution; it is a collective endeavor,” Engr. Mohammed asserted. He emphasized the need for unity and trust as the organization moves forward.

Reaffirming NISO’s commitment to a resilient and flexible grid, he underscored the importance of integrating renewable energy and supporting Nigeria’s long-term economic growth.

“NISO is on the move—and this journey must be taken together,” he concluded, wishing staff, partners, and all Nigerians a peaceful festive season and a prosperous new year.
