AFCON 2025: Super Eagles target winning start against Tanzania

    Published on

Nigeria will begin their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on Tuesday with a Group C clash against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars, as the Super Eagles aim to secure maximum points in their tournament opener.

The encounter, scheduled for the 35,000-capacity Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco, pits one of Africa’s most decorated teams against a side still seeking its first-ever AFCON victory.

Tanzania, coached by Miguel Gamondi, are making only their fourth appearance at the continental showpiece, having exited at the group stage in 1980, 2019 and 2023. They are yet to record a win in nine AFCON matches, with three draws and six defeats.

Nigeria, by contrast, are appearing at the AFCON for the 20th time and boast an illustrious record that includes three titles, five runners-up finishes and eight bronze medals from 104 matches.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is expected to rely on goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, defenders Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey, wing-backs Bright Osayi-Samuel and Zaidu Sanusi, midfield trio Wilfred Ndidi (captain), Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi, and forwards Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.

Tanzania will look to experienced internationals Mbwana Samatta and Simon Msuva for inspiration, alongside wing-back Mohammed Hussein and midfielder Feisal Salum.

Despite chilly conditions expected in Fès, Nigeria remain confident of delivering a performance that will energise fans at home and abroad.
