Ex-Remo Stars player, Sporting Supreme official allege police assault

    Published on

Former Remo Stars player Olamilekan Adams, the media officer of Sporting Supreme FC of Abuja, Nelson Mobougwu, and another player of the club were allegedly assaulted by police officers last Wednesday following Sporting Supreme’s Nigeria National League match against Bichi First FC of Kano at the Bwari Stadium, Abuja.

Adams, a former Sporting Supreme player, and the others were reportedly mistaken for irate fans who protested after the visitors won 1–0 in controversial circumstances.

The situation escalated in the 89th minute when the match ended abruptly following a disputed decision, prompting police officers to fire tear gas to disperse protesting supporters.

In a video that later circulated online, Adams—who recently returned from Europe and attended the match to support his former club—was seen being manhandled by police officers.

“I can’t believe that really happened to me. They almost killed me just because I tried to explain that one of the people they were assaulting was a player, not a fan,” Adams said.

“They started beating me with guns and sticks. One of the club’s media personnel was also there, and they didn’t spare him before taking us to the station.”

Asked if the assault caused injuries that could affect his career, Adams said he was further beaten at the police station.

“They beat me again at the station. They almost killed me and the other guys,” he said.
