Peter Obi slams Tinubu over alleged distribution of luxury vehicles

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has publicly condemned reports that luxury vehicles allegedly associated with President Bola Tinubu were distributed to state coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a move the former Anambra governor called both tone-deaf and politically corrosive amid acute economic hardship.

According to media accounts, the vehicles in question included Toyota Land Cruisers, Hilux trucks and Hummer buses purportedly given to state-level mobilisation operatives. Obi’s response, posted on his X account, described the distribution as “a betrayal of public trust” and an act of “profound insensitivity” at a time when many Nigerians face food insecurity, joblessness and rising insecurity.

Obi framed his critique in moral terms. He insisted leadership must centre service and problem-solving rather than ostentatious displays of power. “Millions of Nigerians can barely afford food, healthcare, or school fees,” he wrote, arguing that diverting public or state-connected resources for wide-scale political mobilisation is indefensible when ordinary citizens struggle to meet basic needs.

The former governor’s rebuke underscores a broader political argument: public resources, he says, should actively address job creation, poverty reduction, health and security instead of bolstering partisan networks. Obi warned that the alleged distribution would deepen public cynicism and erode trust in governance, suggesting that citizens see such acts as confirmation that public institutions are being leveraged for narrow political ends.

Obi’s critics and opponents predictably painted the allegation through partisan lenses, with some dismissing it as politically motivated. But his critique is likely to resonate with voters who perceive a dissonance between government rhetoric on austerity and on-the-ground realities. For a leader whose public brand rests on prudent governance and fiscal responsibility, the optics of luxurious handouts are damaging.

Political analysts say Obi’s intervention also serves a tactical purpose: it repositions him as a moral critic of incumbency and a voice for economic justice in the run-up to 2027. By highlighting the disconnect between government action and citizen need, he taps into a core grievance that transcends party lines — everyday economic survival.

Whether the alleged distribution occurred as reported remains subject to verification. But the larger fallout is immediate: the story amplifies debates about the ethics of state-linked mobilisation, the propriety of using high-value assets in political campaigning, and the vulnerability of public trust during economic strain.

Obi concluded that leadership requires compassion, discipline and accountability; in his view, the government’s priorities ought to reflect those values. His critique signals that, as political positioning accelerates toward 2027, narratives about stewardship and public service will continue to shape voter perceptions and political fortunes.
