Troops repel attack, kill four after communal clash in Taraba

    Published on

Troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army have repelled an attack by armed militia, killing four of the assailants following a renewed communal clash between the Shomo and Wurkun communities in Usmanu Village, located in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The violent confrontation reportedly erupted over a long-standing land dispute between the two communities, which escalated into armed clashes. Prior to military intervention, 15 houses were razed during the violence.

Acting on credible intelligence, the 6 Brigade under Operation Peace Shield (also part of Operation Whirl Stroke) quickly mobilised troops to the area. On arrival Saturday night, soldiers came under fire from assailants emerging from the Fadama axis. In a brief but intense firefight, four attackers were neutralised.

During the follow-up search, the troops recovered arms and ammunition — including a fabricated AK-47 rifle, three Dane guns, 25 rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition, and two motorcycles. In addition, one suspect allegedly affiliated with the militia — reportedly personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) — was arrested and is currently under investigation.

Commenting on the operation, the Commander of 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the soldiers for their swift response, bravery, and adherence to professional rules of engagement. He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to ridding Taraba State of criminal elements and restoring lasting peace and stability.

He also called on residents of Karim Lamido and neighbouring communities to support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities promptly — warning that ongoing operations under Peace Shield, Operation Lafiya Nakowa, and Operation Zafin Wuta will continue until full stability is achieved.
